Long, long ago is actually at nine.

Some people can't keep their mouths shut
It's like some kind of disease
I only ask if you've seen it already
My dear, no spoilers, please!

Wednesday, December 16, 2015

At least it's music related...

I'm sorry, I had to get my nerd on, so yeah.... Only a couple days left!

Light it up at nine

Fun fact! If you search YouTube for "honika", it will correct it to "hanukkah".

Another night for candles
Another night of lights
We've done this six times now
And will for two more nights.

I've got the Manischewitz
I've got the latkes, too
And so, tonight, I'm going to spin
Some wholesome tunes for you.

Friday, December 4, 2015

We'll watch it fall at nine

Krampusnacht is December 5th. That is also Repeal Day.

Grandma said a dream of snow
Meant an impending death
The ice would cause your heart to slow
The stillness would steal your breath
I don't think that that sort of thing
Means quite the same today
But I know that cold winds sting
So bundle up anyway

Walk it off at nine

Today has been nothing but rain
And violence that must be rebuffed
I'd rather do this day again
But frankly, I'm way too stuffed.

Friday, November 13, 2015

We'll forget about it at nine

Warning: that video might make you a little dizzy.

I had something clever
That I was going to say
But other things have intervened
And gotten in the way.

Girls rock in garages at nine

Halloween's over, the time has changed
I'm back on a regular schedule.
So, now, let's return to a genre that's ranged
From delightful to the incredible.

Friday, October 30, 2015

Start spookin' at nine

Finally! With this month passed
Tomorrow will be Halloween
Celebrated in years past
And maybe some months in-between
So what's that mean? I'm glad you asked
It's means I've got some tunes umpteen.

Friday, October 23, 2015

He was nice. At nine.

Tonight should be kinda nice
We're going to do some Vincent Price
And after we get all weepy
Maybe we'll get some Mr. Lee.

Friday, October 16, 2015

Dim the lights at nine

A pretty girl and not much dress
And fake blood by the gallon
In tonight's show, we will address
Horror movies that are Italian.

Friday, October 2, 2015

Hell yeah! It's October!

The thing about werewolves and witches:
Both of them can be called bitches.

Doctor Who

Well, just finished watching the season nine premiere and and I only have this to say:

Actually, if you're curious about the BBC Radiophonic Lab, here's a nifty documentary. They really did some fantastic stuff.

Friday, September 18, 2015

Dip in the pool at nine (before it goes away)

I live close to McKinney
Where teens get chased out of pools
The place is all McMansions
With strip malls and good schools
And so soon the club is moving
To some location (now) unknown
So I'll play sunny music
From a much more temperate zone.

Friday, September 4, 2015

Pull up those boots at nine

I could have gone to a convention
And watched a bunch of anime
They even have a DJ there
Who plays lots of Shibuya-kei

I could have gone to a convention
Given up one of my nights to play
But I thought, instead, I'd like to share
My collection of French Yé-Yé.

Countdown ends at nine

Oh, but could those shadows speak,
About the wind, so fiery hot,
A weapon, sadly, not unique.
We now know what can be wrought.
And though some would like to forget,
It's history. Remember we must.
Even with that, it's a fun set.
Flashes to ashes, bust to dust.

Under the Covers: I Put a Spell On You

One of the things I've tried to collect over time are witchy songs.  This started with a fascination with shows such as Charmed, Sabrina the Teenaged Witch and reruns of Bewitched.  Another thing I like to collect are covers.

This one is from She & Him, a little side project for Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, launched at the request of director Martin Hynes during the filming of 2007's The Go-Getter.  If you haven't heard her before, you might be surprised, this cover really shows off Zooey's skill, and gives me a version of the song full of confidence and direction.  One that calls out to you., seductive, lingering and haunting.

Thing starts at nine

In these dog days of summer, what's a body to do?
The holidays are over, at least for a month or two.
But I've got some driving music, maybe a tune or few
And that sounds pretty good to me. How does it sound to you?

Friday, July 3, 2015

Tour starts at nine

We'll travel 'round the states today
As a way to celebrate
What we will call a holiday
In the good old USA.

The Right Tool For the Job

Of course, I started Second Life on a PC like almost everyone else.  After a very frustrating relationship with a series of laptops, I decided to go Macintosh.  After all, there was a Second Life client for OS X.  And I'd tested it in the shop and it seemed to work well.

So I sprung for a top-of-the-line iMac, and the machine is beautiful.  But the graphics performance was... a little disappointing.

Then, Mesh happened.  And after that, Mesh Bodies.  My poor 19 fps suddenly became 6 fps.  I'm not sure you've ever tried to play that slow, but it actually makes it nearly impossible to type.  I took to using the debug menu to shut off avatar rendering while typing.

One day, something breaks in you and you're just sick of it.  You're either giving up Second Life and just enjoying your friendships via Facebook, or you're doing something drastic.  My drastic was a trip to a PC builder's store and making friends with one of the Sales Geeks there.

I say Sales Geek with honor and distinction, this guy knew his stuff.  Especially how to close a deal.  I walked out with a pile of pieces of a computer, insane confidence and a few links to some YouTube videos on how to put it all together.  Have you ever installed a CPU into a motherboard?  I have now.

And here's my reward.

#wortheverypenny Yes, I'll get the lights when I go.

<3, Seo

P.S. I have it from those in-the-know that El Capitan, the next release of OS X, might as much as double my old FPS numbers.  So if you, too, are in Apple-land, have faith.  Help may just be on the way.

Indie rock served up rare with Mackenzie Raveup. Redwood Plan, Kindness Kind, Gabriel Mintz, Tea Cozies, Beads, Jesus Rehab, Fucking Eagles, Sky Parade, Lovetones, House of Fire, Unnatural Helpers, and a bunch of other things you probably never heard of. Join me.

But still. Tonight, we play some beat.

Save your breath at nine THE ACCORDION SHOW

Carry the beat at nine

This show almost didn't happen.
We had a storm last night
And after a big thunderclap
NOTHING WORKED
But, luckily, I was able
To call support and
Get it fixed.

Friday, May 1, 2015

Bringing the beat back at nine

It's time that I finally confessed:
The show's lost a lot of its zest
But, to treat that concern
I think I should return
And do what I really do best.

Dallas, the CIA, and a landscaper...

"Released in 1984, this song is synonymous with the Starck Club."

Well, to understand that, you have to know what the Starck Club was and what it meant. That's where they passed around huge bowls of MDMA the eve before it was banned. That's where stuff went down.

So, it's almost hilarious to see that a club with a story is synonymous with a song with a story. And what a story it is! Dallas loves a conspiracy. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Range

I heard Tame Impala’s song, “‘Cause I’m a Man” at DJ Maht Wuyt’s set last Sunday.  The range of this band never fails to amaze me.

Maht's Year in Music: 1961 and Ugly's New Music with an Old Soul

Tonight from 6 pm to 8 pm SLT Maht plays the best of 1961, a year with great tunes like "Crying" by the incomparable Roy Orbison.

From 4 pm to 6 pm SLT I'll be playing modern tunes that have sounds reminiscent of music popular in 1961, like the Walkmen's "I Lost You."

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

Slow Build

I am not usually a fan of slow build, but I make an exception for Husky’s “Ruckers Hill.”  It is fantastic.

Maht's Year in Music: 1958 and Ugly's New Music with an Old Soul: Rockabilly Inspired Tunes

Tonight from 6 pm to 8 pm SLT, Maht spins the best music of 1958, the year that Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Great Balls of Fire” reached #1 on the Billboard.

From 5 pm to 6 pm SLT, I’m spinning tunes inspired by Rockabilly sounds, like this tune by PowerSolo, “New Fashioned Girl.”

Tuesday, March 24, 2015

Tuesday Vendetta

This song by the young Ruen Brothers has a great Roy Orbison feel.

Spinning tonight:
Wise 3 to 5 pm

Monday, March 23, 2015

Doors open at seven

Yo-yo's out, I'm filling in
With garage from around the globe
All those bands that might have been!
Lost in time, yet not grown old.

Friday, March 20, 2015

Show starts at nine

And now the room is growing dark
A vision alights on the screen!
And with the music, we embark
Into a journey, to a dream.
And it doesn't matter where,
If at the movies or TV,
The moment you sit in your chair
It's what you feel, you hear, you see.

Holy crap, I almost posted the trailer for the film Town Without Pity. That is some bleak, bleak stuff.

Monday Breather

This tune by Cherokee Red, “The World is My Oyster,” is perfect for a few minutes of getaway time.

Spinning tonight:
Cajsa 5 to 7 pm
YoYo 7 to 9 pm

Sunday, March 15, 2015

New group that I'm following

Postmodern Jukebox.

This multimember, rotating cadre of musicians group is lead by Scott Bradlee.  They cover popular contemporary tunes in jazzy and swing styles.

PMJ already has five albums out including Selfies on Kodachrome released in January 2015. Electro Swing remixers have already taken advantage of this groups stylings.

Postmodern Jukebox is currently on a European tour and will begin it's 38 city North American tour on April 30.  You can find tour dates on PMJlive.com.

See you soon at the Velvet, where music matters.

An odd trio at nine

Bongos are just fun to play,
So it should be no surprise
They're the instrument of choice
For physicists with a Nobel prize.

Organs are interesting as well
And saxophones are alright
So it's a little of all three
That I'm playing tonight.

Happy Friday

This new tune from Azure Blue, "Tragedy & Changes," has a happy new wave sound for your Friday (think When in Rome in the late 80's).  Enjoy!

Thursday, March 12, 2015

The World Ender

Lord Huron departs from the indie folk feel of their first album with this catchy new tune, “The World Ender.”  The combination of surf, western and outlaw sounds is fantastic.

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

Maht's Year In Music: 1957 and Ugly's New Music with an Old Soul: Buddy Holly Inspired Tunes

Tonight from 6 pm to 8 pm SLT, Maht spins the best in music from the year 1957.  It was in this year that Buddy Holly released what is considered by many to be his best recording, "Peggy Sue."

From 4 pm to 6 pm SLT, I'm spinning tunes inspired by Buddy Holly, like Andrew Bird's song "Fiery Crash."  This song came to me as I listened to Holly's 1957 single "Peggy Sue."  The opening chords of these two songs have a strikingly similar sound.

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

New Wave Tuesday with Wise

Today from 3 to 5 pm SLT, Wise brings back New Wave Tuesday.  This song, "Late Risers" by Surf Rock is Dead, sounds strikingly similar to the Cure.

Monday, March 9, 2015

Robotics

Both Echo Somerset and Shona Black spinned robot themed sets this weekend, which inspired this selection.  I heard "Ramble On" by Pacific! at Koi Madzuko's set last week, and have been listening to it ever since.  It has a cool, robotic feel along with some new wave sounds.  Enjoy!

Spinning tonight:

Cajsa 5 to 7 pm
YoYo 7 to 9 pm

Give it a whirl at nine

Tonight I'm going to take a chance
And try something amusing.
I'd like to see if we can dance
To good old lounge music.

Some Fun for Your Thursday

I heard this wonderfully fun tune, "Bills" by Lunchmoney Lewis, at Shona Black's most recent set at the Velvet.  This Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, Shona will be DJing a 24 hour indie pub crawl to benefit the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org).  It will be great music for a great cause.  Hope to see you there.

Beam aboard at nine

I got the news this morning
And so it's only proper
That tonight we mourn him right
And then live long and prosper.

Nineties Nostalgia

This new song by Speedy Ortiz, "Raising the Skate," has me nostalgic for the 90's.  It reminds me a lot of Kim Deal in the Breeders.  Enjoy!
