The Right Tool For the Job

Of course, I started Second Life on a PC like almost everyone else.  After a very frustrating relationship with a series of laptops, I decided to go Macintosh.  After all, there was a Second Life client for OS X.  And I'd tested it in the shop and it seemed to work well.

So I sprung for a top-of-the-line iMac, and the machine is beautiful.  But the graphics performance was... a little disappointing.

Then, Mesh happened.  And after that, Mesh Bodies.  My poor 19 fps suddenly became 6 fps.  I'm not sure you've ever tried to play that slow, but it actually makes it nearly impossible to type.  I took to using the debug menu to shut off avatar rendering while typing.

One day, something breaks in you and you're just sick of it.  You're either giving up Second Life and just enjoying your friendships via Facebook, or you're doing something drastic.  My drastic was a trip to a PC builder's store and making friends with one of the Sales Geeks there.

I say Sales Geek with honor and distinction, this guy knew his stuff.  Especially how to close a deal.  I walked out with a pile of pieces of a computer, insane confidence and a few links to some YouTube videos on how to put it all together.  Have you ever installed a CPU into a motherboard?  I have now.

And here's my reward.

#wortheverypenny Yes, I'll get the lights when I go.

P.S. I have it from those in-the-know that El Capitan, the next release of OS X, might as much as double my old FPS numbers.  So if you, too, are in Apple-land, have faith.  Help may just be on the way.
